But seriously, folks…

B

Lately we’ve gotten a ton of calls from potential clients wanting to work with us.  And there’s nothing we love more than clients who want to pay us tons of money.  Unfortunately, client expectations often exceed things like … reality.

Here’s an example:  Client calls in, says they need to make more money from their music.  I ask them to send along links to their website, Facebook, and tour schedule.  Right away, the client says “oh, I don’t perform live.”  Then we see that the album came out 2 years ago, and there’s no recent or planned activity.  Regardless of how much money we could make from this client, there’s no way to make them successful.

Here’s another example:  Client has limitless budget, has an album in the can, but won’t release it.  Over a year passes, and they spend tons of cash on every non-essential asset possible.  Claims that touring simply isn’t practical, and assumes that having a team of (overpaid?) professionals on board will make her a success.  Guess what kids, success comes from within.  You only get out what you put in.

One more example:  Client identifies that I’m the guy to help them with their career.  They love everything I’ve suggested, and want to get started right away.  Great!  Then they ask my rate, and counter with “what can you do for $100 / month?”

Anything you can do online will support your efforts to further your music and career.  But you can’t substitute “more Internet” for “less” of anything else.  If you’re not prepared to spend time on the road, in the studio, and in rehearsal/practice, then no amount of any marketer’s time will provide fame and fortune.  Sorry kids, you still have to work hard.
