RockGeek Fact of the Day #4913

Take a listen to “Sway” by the Rolling Stones.  Pete Townshend from The Who, singer Billy Nichols, and Ronnie Lane from Small Faces all sang background vocals, and the strings were arranged by Paul Buckmaster — best known for his work with Elton John.  The Rolling Stones arrive in Boston tonight for two shows…

Fixing the MBTA

Here in Boston we’ve got our knickers in a potential twist.  Yet again, there’s talk of raising fares on the “T” to offset some staggering deficits.  It amazes me that so many companies (and politicians…) think they can continually cut spending in order to raise revenues.  The natural logic is that if you spend less, you’ll earn more.  Unfortunately that just...

What about Dispatch?

I spend a LOT of time at music industry events. And I spent a lot of time in college as a music business major. And I grew up in Boston. So when I see a band that's doing everything the industry's leading voices are recommending, I (at least...) pay attention. The bizarre twist is that NOBODY else is paying attention -- except the fans!

Snowpocalypse Now

It snowed in Boston.  One reporter saw a guy named Noah putting snow tires on his ark.  Shoopa Shoopa.  Knowing that I was going to be spending a large amount of time outside snowblowing/shoveling/cursing my life, I used Rdio to make a lovely playlist.

Coincidence? Could it be?

Picture of the Day: The Rat

Gone for nearly a decade, The Rat(hskellar) in Kenmore Square (Boston) was the dingy, local launchpad for all kinds of bands. A couple of note: The Police, The Talking Heads, and the Ramones. Take a little walk down memory lane, and remember the feeling of your lungs collapsing from the thick smoke while your feet stuck to the floor…

Savor the experience…

Last Friday, I had the extreme pleasure of being a dinner guest at Boston’s Oak Room. It’s a steakhouse in the classic tradition that fusses over every detail, serves the highest quality cuisine, and charges its patrons accordingly. As dining goes, it’s fantastic. But what really got me to thinking was the overall experience — how it kept me thoroughly contented and...

Ethics Shmethics.

Today is a day that Bostonians have been waiting 20 years for: Celtics/Lakers tickets go on sale for the 2008 NBA Finals. At 2 PM, fans everywhere queued up online, at ticket sellers, and on the phone to witness history. Within minutes, all tickets were gone. The only choice for tickets now is to turn to a secondary market: eBay, Craigslist, or places like StubHub. Locally, Ace Ticket is the...
