Happy 49th Birthday to Michael Stipe of REM! Listen to the song “Driver 8” and see if it sounds familiar. There’s a series of minor chords that guitarist Peter Buck would use again on “The One I Love,” “Losing My Religion,” and “Bang and Blame,” among others.
Talking about “Driver 8” recently, Stipe said, “It’s like breathing – I don’t think about it when I sing it. I was listening to these live tapes and thought it was a beautiful song with incredible imagery. I listen to our old albums and think, ‘OK, this is where that went wrong, this is a way to improve that.’ And ‘Wow, that’s really good. You’re not the hoax you think you are.’ ”
P.S. For anyone interested, Driver 8 is my favorite REM song…
