After realizing that I hadn’t taken a “real” vacation of any sort in over 2 years, I thought it was time to get away — even just for a weekend. An invitation from a relative to relax up at his house in NH seemed the perfect match. One disclaimer: this house has no internet, no tv, and it’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I hadn’t been “unplugged” in a long time, and I was actually nervous about the whole thing.
Arriving up in NH, I noticed things that others see/feel all the time: fresh air, stars (real ones, in the sky!), and a much slower pace. All the frantic, run-around craziness of my weeks (months, years…) started to dissipate when I realized that not only was there nothing to do, that was exactly the point.
Within a couple of days (spent apple-picking, napping, and poking around the local places, and napping), I began to sense the presence of inner-calm that I thought had vanished. Doing nothing, at the expense of not getting things done, is nerve-wracking. But when doing nothing is the stated goal, it’s a wonderful thing.
I’m back now, after barely a 72 hour excursion, but the work which awaits me isn’t nearly as daunting as it was. The batteries have been recharged, and life goes on.
P.S. Blissfully, the Yum Yum Shop in Wolfeboro, NH still lives up to its name.
