RIP Dave Mason.
Nearly 15 years ago, thanks to Bruce Garfield, I had the chance to work with Dave Mason. Typical marketing stuff – newsletters, social media, YouTube. At the time, I was amazed to be working with an actual legend. Friends with Hendrix, a member of Traffic, solo hits, an album with Mama Cass, and so much more.
Years later, when I got to City Winery, Dave was one of the first shows I promoted. To make it extra special, we set up a career retrospective in the lobby courtesy of the David Bieber Archives. Dave and Winifred got to see our exhibit, and they thought it was pretty cool.
Just before the show, Dave came up to me. He said he needed a peking duck delivered to his tour bus right when they walked off stage. Why, I asked, are you coming to me with this request? He said I was the only one up to the challenge. My guess is everyone else said absolutely not…
Anyway, Dave got his duck, the show was a sold out success, and now…he’s gone. It’s scary to see so many music icons slipping away, especially those with a hankering for post-show duck.
My thoughts are with Winifred and all of Dave’s fans…
