Words are powerful; they connote feelings, opinions, and facts. The right word, at the right time, can do so much. Unfortuntely, there are multiple phrases which have become far too ubiquitous in our daily discourse, and they deserve to be banned. Here’re my least favorite. Maybe you have your own?
Off the hook. As in, “that party was off the hook … ” Really? When’s the last time you had something on the hook?
-izzle. As in, fo’shizzle. Let’s face it, we’re not cool when we talk like that. Even Snoop is starting to sound a bit silly…
Word. As in, “The Red Sox are the best team ever. Word.” It’s just lame.
Like. As in, I totally, like, love that new Taylor Swift tune. She’s so, like, awesome. No, she’s not. Neither are you.
Off the grid. As in, “I’m headin’ north this weekend and going totally off the grid.” You’re not. And odds are, you’ll be Tweeting anyway.
Feel free to add more. There’s gotta be, like, hundreds of ’em. Fo’shizzle.
P.S. What’re words for when nobody listens anymore?
“Outside the box”–so many are thinking outside the box that no one is left inside.
