Where is David Bowie?

W

Without going on and on and on about how last night’s Closing Ceremonies, what seemed oddest to me was the attention lavished on David Bowie.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy.  But where has he been lately?  There’s no mentions of him in the press, no albums to promote, no tour dates, not even a TMZ style “hey-look-who-we-just-bumped-into-getting-dinner-at-Mr-Chow’s” photo.  Nothing.  Zero.

The Olympics had his music blasting through the arena, did a whole interpretive dance-y thing with “Fashion,” and flashed his photo a few times.  They even dragged out Madness to perform.  And (if you weren’t in America) you got to see Kate Bush, Ray Davies, and The Who.  In fact, they even woke up Nick Mason and got him to perform with people he’s never heard of.  So where was Bowie?

Most artists of “stature” don’t just fade off into the sunset.  A farewell tour, a press release, something … anything …. but not Bowie.  While Elton continues to pack houses, and the Rolling Stones dance around the idea of a 50th Anniversary tour, Bowie just vanished into the ether.  What’s strange to me is that nobody seems to care.  There’s no outcry or lament, and it’s just taken as gospel that this is nothing out of the ordinary.

I’d like to sound an alarm:  David Bowie has gone missing.  Call his record label.
Is he still cashing royalty checks?   That might be the only way to know he’s still with us …
